Opened in 1995 as a Heritage Centre exploring local history and culture with the Wee Hannah Exhibition & New Lake Exhibition, it has evolved into a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. The Workhouse has a lovely coffee shop specialising in home baking, a craft shop that is slowly extending it’s range of local Donegal crafts as well as a Community Playground and Toddler Park.

Waves of Change Project Waves of Change Project“The Waves of Change” project is a series of cross community & cross border facilitated workshops & activities that are focused on Maritime Heritage & Culture which is an area of common interest. The Project is open to all young people aged 12 to 18 living in the locality.  

Community Playground image of toddler bandstand The Community Playground & Toddler Park are now open free of charge to the public. The funders are as follows: Community Support Scheme, Donegal Local Development Company Ltd, the Department of Communcations, Energy & Natural Resources & the Minister & Department of Community, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs.

 

Heritage Week heritage weekHeritage Week takes place from 21st August to 29th August 2010. Join the Workhouse and enjoy a variety of activities, including a Heritage Walk and a Will and Tissue Sculpture, during the course of the week to celebrate National Heritage Week.

International Quilt Day International Quilt DayThe Workhouse took part in the International Quilt Day with an exhibition of small quilts and a children’s workshop which was organised by the Sheephaven Bay Quilters Guild. The Workhouse Coffee Shop also had a number of specials on offer to celebrate the day. We are looking forward to the next one in 2011!

 

Wee Hannah, A Living History Exhibition experiencesSee and hear "Wee Hannah" tell the true story of her long life. "Wee Hannah" talks of her harsh upbringinig on a farm in the 1830's, her time in the Dunfanaghy Workhouse, and eventually a more peaceful old age.

The Origins of the New Lake, Wind, Water & Sand experiencesA fascinating film about the fluidity of these elements and the human activity which helped change this landscape so dramatically in the early part of the 20th century.

 

 

Coffee Shop & Art Gallery experiencesAt our coffee shop you can relax and enjoy a variety of fresh homebaked cakes, teas, coffee's, soups, sandwiches and rolls. You can also visit our art gallery with regularly changing exhibitions, paintings and sculptures.

Craft & Book Shop experiencesHigh Quality and Great Value Crafts including jewellrey, rugs, soaps and candles, many of which are made locally. We also sell souvenirs, and a great range of toys and items for children. We also Stock a wide selection of books including children's, information and local history. There are also second hand books on offer for 2 euros each for those rainy days.
