The Dunfanaghy Workhouse Receives Grant from Donegal Local Development Company Ltd

The Workhouse is delighted to announce that it has received funding from the Donegal Local Development Company Ltd and the Rural Development Programme (Leader) 2007-2013, to carry out enhancement of facilities at The Workhouse, under Measure "323 Conservation and Upgrading of the Rural Heritage".

The work will include the installation of a wheelchair lift, a new exhibition with a new improved sound system to accompany the existing Wee Hannah Exhibition and a comfortable 50 seater cinema and an area for both Artists and Historical Exhibitions of interest.

Wilton Paton the Chairperson of The Workhouse said "It is fantastic news that we have been awarded the funding. This allows us to upgrade our services to encourage more tourists to visit the Heritage Centre. The upgrading of our video facilities to a cinema will allow us to run a film club for adults and children. It is a very exciting time for Dunfanaghy with both the development of the Market House and the Workhouse and it offers a very positive future for Dunfanaghy with so many projects being undertaken."

Sian McCann the Heritage Centre Manager said "We are delighted with the news and there is a lot of excitement locally about the cinema. We are really looking forward to hosting a Saturday Kids club, a Cinema Night for the Youth Club and an Local Film club with a variety of films to while away the Winter months."

"We are having a "Refurbishment Sale" before we close so all the stock must go and there are some really great bargains to be had!!" "Although the Workhouse will be closed until the end of February, The Waves of Change project will still be running and we can assure both the Youth Club and Dolphin Club we will continue as normal in the Workhouse until Tuesday 13th December when we will close for Christmas. We will have alternative premises in January when the clubs start up again in the New Year."

Ballymore N.S. Green Schools Committee - Energy Audit Report

Our Trip to the Workhouse.

Ballymore N.S. Green Schools CommitteeToday we went to the Workhouse to visit Mrs. McCann. We asked her questions about how she uses energy. We're going to help her save energy.

They already do some things to help the environment and save energy:

  • They bake their own bread and cakes.
  • They use local, seasonal vegetables for the soup.
  • A lot of heat was going up the old chimney so they blocked it up.

They have 2 fridges and 1 freezer which need to be on all the time.

They heat most of the rooms with electric storage heaters but use gas heaters if it is very cold in Winter.

She showed us around and answered all our questions. We are going to come up with new ideas and make up some signs for the taps and light switches.

We got juice and cup-cakes. It was a brilliant day. We arrived back at school at half past twelve.
